MIGRAIN: Assessment 2 Learner Response

Assessment 2 Learner Response

Marks = 26

Grade = B

WWW - A strong assessment: great to see your opinion coming through alongside terminology and theory

EBI - Revise industry and PSB a little to add the knowledge required for the top level. Question 4 would benefit from a little more organisation and paragraphing. Examples will also help but studying the CSP's will provide material for this.

Question 1: I could have talked about the use of the modern yet serif font for the artist name to suggest that Stormzy has a strong presence yet moves with times. I could have also talked about the gold, textured colour scheme to the main text to show connotations of success and luxury, reflecting Stormzy's career.

Question 2: I could have referenced Conglomerate ownership and how it helps dominate media industries through sheer size and power and how it can also help reduce costs and increase profit.

Question 3: In terms of the argument For, I could have talked about how it is regulated by Ofcom so therefore maintaining standards and providing audiences somewhere to complain or raise objections to content. For the argument Against, I could have talked about how BBC and Channel 4 shouldn't produce popular programmes like Strictly Come Dancing as it is unfair on commercial broadcasters struggling to survive.

Question 4: I could have referred more to Gerbner's cultivation theory suggesting that heavy TV viewers developed 'mean world syndrome' and saw society as far more dangerous that it actually is. This would have been considered a significant damaging effect.

From a scale of 1-10, I would say I was on a 7 in terms of revision and preparation for the assessment. I have also completed all the the original blog tasks from the last term before doing the assessment.

For Question 2, I was able to write about 2 different strategies and 2 different benefits but I could have gotten 2 more marks if I had talked about conglomerate ownerships and their size and power.

For Question 3, I was able to write about the BBC and commercial broadcasters but I could have achieved a higher mark if I talked about how it is regulated by Ofcom so therefore maintaining standards and providing audiences somewhere to complain or raise objections to content.

Gerbner’s cultivation theory refers the amount of time spent absorbing the world of television and how people are more likely to report perceptions of social reality that can be traced to television's most persistent representations of life and society. This has lead to the suggested idea that heavy TV viewers would develop ‘mean world syndrome’ and would see society as more of a threat to them then it actually is. This would be a significantly damaging effect to audiences as it would render the persons original perception of society useless due to their altered conception of it.
