Media Regulation: Blog Task

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

Regulation is a rule or directive made by an authority figure and media industries need to be regulated in order to ensure that organisations act fairly

2) What is OFCOM responsible for?

OFCOM is responsible for regulation telephone services, radio, television
and some aspects of the internet. They are also responsible for granting licenses to Radio stations and TV companies.

3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?

1. Protecting minors as people under eighteen should be protected from certain aspects of media that could be seen as unsafe and damaging to those who are underage.

2. Privacy as the information of everyone should remain disclosed and private to the public eye.

3. Religion as anything broadcasted about religion should be factually correct, otherwise it would disrespect the religion in itself by allowing false information to spread.

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

I agree with OFCOM as Wolverine contained dark fantasy and very explicit violent themes which were seen by children, a vast amount of them being between four and nine.

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.

Privacy
, Children, Reporting of crime, Discrimination, harassment

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?

Lack of powers means that when newspapers break the rules, the best that a victim can get is an apology, which doesn't get enough recognisability in the paper and they constantly break the rules with little consequence.

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

The Leveson enquiry was a judicial public inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press following the News International phone hacking. It was set up due to phone scandals of an investigator and a reporter intercepted phone calls connected to the royal family

8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?

The Independent Press Standards Organisation.

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

Newspapers should face statutory regulation, because newspapers should show a wide range on diversity and news that they publish.

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?
It is difficult to regulate as people easily find ways to circumvent any rules placed on the internet and now everyone can view every type of media on the internet, making it harder to place any rules made.
